The line graph displays the number of overseas travelers that visited Japan for varying reasons from 1990 to 2010.
Overall, visitors to Japan for the given purposes generally rose, with business travel being the most common reason for visiting.
The majority of travelers to Japan came for business, maintaining the highest figures throughout the period. In 1990, around 6.5 million people came for business-related purposes. The numbers steadily rose until they peaked at roughly 9.5 million in 2000. From there, figures dropped, falling to 7.5 million in 2005. However, numbers went up again, ending the period at 9 million travelers.
The two other types of visitors to Japan also had rising numbers from 1990 to 2010, but their trends were not as erratic as the business travelers. Holiday travelers were the second biggest group in 1990 with approximately 5.5 million visitors, though this fell in the succeeding years, dropping to 4 million in 1993. Afterward, the numbers improved as the figures soared to 8 million in 2009 before dipping to roughly 7 million in 2010. Visiting friends was the third reason presented. At the start of the period, about 3.5 million people went to Japan for this purpose. The numbers increased steadily, reaching 6.5 million in 2005. By 2010, however, the figures were just over 6 million.
