The three pie graphs display global tea production and consumption as well as the distribution of profits from the tea industry.
Overall, South Africa is the biggest tea producer worldwide, whereas Europe is where tea is primarily consumed. Regarding profit distribution, much of the earnings go to the transport of tea products rather than the producers themselves.
As presented, South Africa is the biggest tea producer, contributing nearly 40% of global tea products. The remaining supply comes from Asia, with Indonesia (25%) as the next biggest supplier, followed by Japan and Vietnam, which are nearly equal in tea production.
Tea consumption presents a different story as tea is predominantly consumed in regions outside where it is produced, except for Japan. European nations consume half of the tea worldwide, followed by the USA, where more than a quarter of the tea supply is consumed. Japan, one of the global suppliers, is at roughly 5%, while other countries drink the rest.
Regarding profits, surprisingly, most of the earnings go to the delivery of tea products (50%). Retailers take up the next biggest chunk, receiving 25% of the profits. Exporters and tea producers only gain around 10% each for their efforts, while the remaining profits go to other parties involved in the tea business.
