The bar graph displays data on New Zealand’s tourists from three countries in 1999 and 2009. The line graph presents information about two activities tourists did while on vacation.

Overall, New Zealand experienced a rise in tourists from the UK and the US, whereas numbers from Japan dropped. Tourists generally preferred to stay in New Zealand’s resorts, although backpacking had become just as popular at the end of the period.

Tourists to New Zealand from the UK and US both increased by 2009. In 1999, a million visitors were from the UK, while 800,000 came from the US. A decade later, the figures for both countries jumped: 1,600,000 for the UK and roughly 1,500,000 for the US. Japanese visitors, however, decreased in the same period. From a high of 1,500,000 in 1999, Japanese visitors to New Zealand fell to around 1,100,000 in 2009.

As for how tourists enjoyed their New Zealand vacation between 1999 and 2009, most preferred to stay at a resort. In 1999, around 1,700,000 visitors were checked in. Figures rose to about 2,400,000 in 2004 before falling to just 1,100,000 in 2009. On the other hand, backpacking became a trend, as approximately 250,000 tourists backpacked in 1999. The numbers increased nearly fourfold until 1,100,000 backpacked in New Zealand in 2009, similar to those staying in resorts.
