The chart shows the maximum, minimum and average salaries of people employed in five different industries in 2009.
Among the five employment areas in the table, employees in the finance industry had the highest maximum earnings at £8850 whereas at the other end of the scale, the best paid hospitality workers received around a third of this amount, with a maximum salary of just £2900.The highest minimum salaries were also found in the finance sector, with even the lowest paid employees making £1600. By contrast, construction workers earned the lowest minimum at just £790, which was less than half the minimum wage in the finance industry.
The average salary of £5225 in the finance sector, was significantly higher than in any of the other industries, and nearly doubled the second highest average salary of £2712 found in the transportation industry. Workers in construction and hospitality had the lowest average salaries, earning £1945 and £1895 respectively.
Overall, working in the finance industry was more lucrative than any of the other fields of employment, regardless of an employee’s position on the pay scale.
