The bar chart gives information regarding the number of international students from four countries who applied to a European university from 2004 to 2008. Overall, applicants from China and USA significantly outnumbered those from Russia and Japan. The number of Russian applications was consistently lower than those of the other three countries over the five years.
The number of Chinese applicants reached a peak of 27000 in 2004, which then gradually decreased to about 18000 in 2006 when America had the same amount of the applications. However, the decrease continued after 2007, eventually having fallen to 15000 by 2008 when China was exceeded by America in the same year.
The number of Japanese applicants showed an upward trend over the five years, reaching 10000 applicants in 2008, which doubled the number from 2004. Interestingly, despite the rise, the number was still dwarfed by nearly 30000 American students who applied in 2008.
which
As for applications from America, we can see a fluctuation in the number, starting from 20000 in 2004 and dropping to 10000 in 2007. Surprisingly, the amount then soared to about 27000 applicants in 2008, which was higher than the previous peak in 2004. In contrast, Russia’s growth stopped in 2007 when the gap between the two countries was the narrowest, thus being far behind the USA in the next year.
